  1. RIP Piggy. Voivod is the most underrated band in metal. And they base most of their songs on my favorite scale, the whole tone; at least that's what my ears are telling me.

  2. They also used the diminished scale, but both scales use the tritone.

  3. Yeah, they use those symmetrical pitch structures a lot (what Messiaen would call "modes of limited transposition"). Also, a lot of different parts to their songs! They're fun to listen to, very unpredictable. They're often put into the "progressive metal" category, but they're very different from bands like Queensrÿche & Dream Theater, so some say they're more "avant-garde metal." Then they get lumped in with Napalm Death, Celtic Frost, The Mars Volta, Neurosis. But also metal-ish post-rock groups like Pelican & Isis. Seems to be a catch-all subgenre for any metal or sort-of metal that's weird & hard to classify.
